A soldier's bag and shovel from the production of HBO’s 2010 television series, The Pacific.
Based on the accounts of Marines in World War II, this 10-part miniseries follows the intertwined journeys of three U.S. Marines in the Pacific Theatre - Private First Class Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale) and Eugene B. Sledge (Joseph Mazzello) and Sergeant John Basilone (Jon Seda) - from their first battle against Japan on Guadalcanal, across the sands of Iwo Jima and the horror of Okinawa, to their ultimately triumphant return after V-J Day.
This bag and shovel, and others like it, are worn by the Marines through the series. The bag is made of canvas and stuffed with thrift store polo-necks from America and Thailand, to give it weight and structure. The roll mat that curves over the bag is likewise stuffed with fabric and secured at one end. The bag is fully-functional and secured with canvas straps threaded through a metal webbing buckle. The shovel is made of rubber, painted to look like a combination of wood and metal, and strapped securely into a cover attached to the bag. The piece is in good, production-used, condition.
Materials: Cotton, Man-Made Woven Fibres, Rubber, Ferrous Metals.
