A metal katana and sheath used by a Japanese commissioned officer in the companion piece to Band of Brothers, the 2010 TV series The Pacific.
Produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, the show chronicles the lives of Marines sent out to the Pacific theatre to fight the Imperial Japanese Army in their long and arduous island-hopping campaign.
This sword and others like it were used by the commissioned officers of the Imperial Japanese Army as they fought the US. The sword is made with a steel blade which has been blunted for use on the production, it has intricately detailed brass hardware on the grip, guard and sheath, all of which are covered in decorative floral engraving. The wooden sword handle is bound with lengths of leather for improved grip. A release catch on the grip’s right hand side allows the sword to be released from its metal sheath, which is painted brown and wrapped in a leather cover. Regimental tassels, patterned in blue and tan, are tied to carriage loops on the pommel and sheath of the sword.
This item has clearly been well-used on the production, but also well-maintained: the sword has been oiled to prevent surface rust forming in the humid filming conditions. Some rust is still present, along with various signs of production wear, however the sword remains in overall very good condition.
Materials: Ferrous Metals, Wood, Man-Made Fibres, Leather.
