An effects break-down board from Duncan Jones’ 2009 science fiction film Moon.
Moon tells the story of Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell), a man who experiences a personal crisis as he nears the end of a three year solitary stint mining on the far side of the moon, with only his robot companion GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey) for company.
This item compromises of two lightweight boards (one black, one light grey) with paper stuck to each of them. The light grey board has six pieces of paper and the black board has fourteen.
The light grey board details various effects in scenes 73, 75 and 79. Images on each piece of paper show members of the effects team standing in for Sam Rockwell. The first four pages break down scene 73, where Sam Bell evades GERTY and prises open a vent, only to be discovered. Every page is annotated with precise camera movements and potential special effects and visual effects to be included.
The fifth and sixth pages on the light grey board show the pivotal scene where Sam Bell carries the body of a duplicate Sam Bell back to the dock. Extensive notes give an insight into how the effects team planned on achieving this, using a weighted dummy with a green head.
The black board breaks down the effects used in scenes 104-107, 151 and 168, utilising computer composites and photographic assets to bring the scenarios to life.
There is some wear and curling of the stuck-on paper, consistent with production use, but overall these two pieces are in good condition.
Materials: Paper, Card.
