Chen Pao Shen's (Victor Wong) vintage Mauve Overrobe from Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1987 Oscar®-winning drama The Last Emperor.
The Emperor's High Tutor can be seen wearing a robe of this style when the now grow-up Emperor elects to return to Manchukou to be crowned Emperor again.
The garment was made in the Qing Dynasty, making it a stunning piece of over one hundred years old. The lightweight purple damask surcoat with rich blue silk lining features roundels of Chinese symbols and a hidden breast pocket beneath the front flap. The horseshoe cuffs beautifully present the bright lining, and the robe fastens with metal knot buttons running from the neck to the right side. It is an excellent antique piece that remains in great condition.
It comes from the private collection of renowned producer Jeremy Thomas (who singlehandedly raised the $25 million budget for the movie) and was archived after filming completed until Prop Store proudly assisted in sorting and cataloguing the incredible inventory under the guidance and in collaboration with Oscar®-winning Costume Designer, Jim Acheson.
Materials: Man-Made Woven Fibres.
