Among the most iconic figures of the Jazz Age, Josephine Baker was perhaps the most notable dancer of her time. Dubbed the Black Pearl, she sailed to Paris in 1925, becoming an almost instantaneous success, and soon starred at the famous Folies Bergere. In 1927, Baker caused a sensation when she wore a short skirt of artificial bananas and a beaded necklace, now one of the best-known images of the 1920s. This is a lovely display of postcards created for the public depicting the dancer in her most alluring attire.

The cards on the left and right show minor wear to the tips of the corners, while the card in the center shows a slight abrasion to the lower right edge and just a bit more wear to the tips of the corners than the other cards.

Born in 1906, French-American performer Josephine Baker was the first Black woman to ever star in a major movie, namely 1927's Siren of the Tropics. Despite gaining fame as the "Black Venus" in Hollywood, she left the States for France in 1937 and renounced her US citizenship, though during the '50s she supported the American civil rights movement.
