Young Iris Murdoch's (Kate Winslet) red two-piece dress from the production of Richard Eyre’s 2001 biopic Iris.
The film charts the true story and lifelong romance between novelist Iris Murdoch (Kate Winslet/Judi Dench) and her husband John Bayley (Hugh Bonneville/Jim Broadbent), from their lives as students through to her battle with Alzheimer’s in later life.
This dress appears near the beginning of the film, when the young Iris and John attend a student party before going back to his flat. The dress comes in two parts: a top with a plunging V-neck and a midi-length skirt with red organza overlay. The two pieces hook together through a series of metal attachments around the waist. Both are done up at the back with metal zips. As the dress was made specially for Winslet in the role it does not have any labelling indicating size, but both sections do have labels with ‘Kate Winslet’ handwritten on them.
The dress has some minor wear from production use and age, including some plucking on the materials and some loose threads, but despite this it remains in an otherwise very good condition.
Materials: Man-Made Woven Fibres, Ferrous Metals.
