A blueprint for Arthur Dent’s (Martin Freeman) toilet and shower from Garth Jennings’ 2005 sci-fi comedy The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Based on the famous novel by Douglas Adams, the film follows the eccentric story of Dent – a journeyman who is taken on an intergalactic adventure by researcher friend Ford Prefect (Mos Def/Yasiin Bey) who is writing a new edition of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”
Near the start of the film, Dent and Prefect escape the demolition of Earth by stowing away on a Vogon Constructor Fleet ship. They find themselves in its futuristic washroom, which the blueprint was created to visualise. It is labelled as being part of ‘Int – Ship’.
Printed on an A0-sized piece of draft paper, the highly-detailed blueprint features intricate illustrations for the room’s pipework, elevation, doorways and other sections. It is covered with notes detailing part appearance and logistics for construction and within the scene – additional handwritten note and highlighted sections cover the drawings.
The bottom right corner features a H.H.G.G. Art Department table detailing teams and relevant crew members. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is mentioned alongside the name of Igor Jadue’lillo (D.O.P.). The drawing (no. ‘105’) was created by ‘Dean’ for stage ‘6’ and ‘set 13’ on’25 Feb’. Two ‘Approved’ stamps appear below this.
Well-used during production, the sheet features heavy folding and several edge tears. It has yellowed with natural ageing, and there are several minor stains across its surface. It remains in overall good condition.
