A maquette of Princess Nuala (Anna Walton) used in the production of Guillermo del Toro’s 2008 action adventure Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
Killing his father and seeking out the pieces of an ancient crown, the elven prince Nuada (Luke Goss) declares war on humanity, breaking a time-honoured truce. Can Hellboy (Ron Perlman), Liz (Selma Blair) and the B.P.R.D. defeat Nuada before the legendary Golden Army is brought to bear on the human race?
The movie’s prologue, inspired by a TV show that the young Hellboy (Montse Ribé) is seen watching, uses a wide range of puppets to tell the story of how the Golden Army came to be and how peace returned to humanity and the magical creatures of the forests. The sequence, designed by Guillermo del Toro and Hellboy comic artist Mike Mignola during production in Budapest, is a wonderfully expressive and creative solution to a big-budget live-action retelling, and in Mignola’s words - “They are probably my favourite things I did for the film.”
To create the sequence, a host of maquettes and prototypes were made to show how all the characters would appear. Sculpted and cast in resin, this maquette is of Princess Nuala, sister of the rebellious Nuada.
In a cleaned up but mostly unfinished state, the maquette is in a very good, production-used condition
