Wooden Barbarian Shield

Stock #38396

”Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?”

A wooden barbarian shield from the production of Ridley Scott’s Academy Award winning epic Gladiator.

Betrayed by his Emperor’s son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and sold into slavery, Roman general Maximus (Russell Crowe) finds his calling in the arena as a gladiator. But when a festival of games begins in Commodus’ honour, Maximus returns to Rome with thoughts of revenge for his lost Emperor and family.

During the film’s opening battle sequences, the Barbarian horde used a variety of round shields – this is one of several made for production.

Made from a single piece of wood, the large round shield has been covered with canvas that has been heavily painted and distressed to look like well-worn leather. Rough stitching forms three distinct ‘spokes’ from the centre, where an unpainted circular patch indicates that a protective hub was fixed, removed during heavy use on production. The canvas has torn here too, exposing the raw wood underneath. On the reverse, two leather arm loops have been tightly bolted onto the shield.

Displaying heavy wear from use, the shield remains in fair overall condition.

Materials: Wood, Man-Made Woven Fibres, Ferrous Metals.
