An Infantry shield with cover from Ridley Scott's 2000 Oscar®-winning action epic Gladiator.
Betrayed by his Emperor’s son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and sold into slavery, Roman general Maximus (Russell Crowe) finds his calling in the arena as a gladiator. But when a festival of games begins in Commodus’ honour, Maximus returns to Rome with thoughts of revenge for his lost Emperor and family.
This shield and others like it were made for the production and were carried by Roman Infantry soldiers, most notably during the opening battle. The shield is wooden and covered with painted canvas. It features a wooden handle at the back. It is decorated with gold wings and a plastic dome in the centre which is painted to resemble metal. The edge features a metal rim. The shield comes with a material cover to protect it.
The shield has been intentionally distressed to look battle-hardened but also shows damaged from its use during the filming. It has a couple of notable cracks and gouges on the front. Overall it remains in an excellent, production-used condition.
Materials: Wood, Ferrous Metals, Plastic, Man-Made Woven Fibres.
