“Civilization is crumbling”

Shang’s (Stephen Graham) costume from Martin Scorsese's historical crime drama, Gangs of New York.

Set in 1863, this movie tells the story of Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) who returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis), his father's killer. These trousers can be seen throughout the film.

Shang wore this outfit at a public dance, when Jenny (Cameron Diaz) holds a mirror and chooses Amsterdam to dance with her. He also wears parts of the costume with various other garments throughout the film.

The outfit consists of a brown jacket, a striped off-white shirt, a waistcoat and a pair of brown denim trousers and a pair of brown lace up boots (size 43). Intentionally distressed to produce a worn appearance, the brown cotton jacket displays frayed seams and five button fastenings on the front. A red brocade printed pattern decorates the waistcoat and a different colourway has been used for the lapels. Each garment contains sewn in labels with handwritten text the actors name, the character name ‘Shang’ and scene numbers.

The costume displays minor marks and the shoes notably have become worn from use on production. Overall the costume remains in very good condition.
