A red feather headdress from Mike Hodges' 1980 sci-fi adventure Flash Gordon.
Faced with the destruction of Earth after a string of disasters, New York Jets quarterback Flash Gordon (Sam J Jones) and journalist Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are forced by Dr Hans Zarkov (Topol) to fly to the planet Mongo to investigate. Little do they know that the ruthless emperor Ming (Max von Sydow) doesn’t take kindly to guests. Can Flash defeat Ming, free Mongo and save the Earth?
This style of headdress was worn by a background court member in ceremony scenes in Ming’s palace, most notably when Flash is led to a gas chamber. The headdress consists of a unique beaded ‘crown’ section made from a faux-leather material with wire running along the bottom edge and a transparent acetate backing applied. A piece of black elastic is attached to the front piece, along with a metal hair clip and multiple strands of bright red and pink strands of ‘feather boas’ trail behind the ‘crown’ piece.
The backing and wire on the front piece have become detached in areas and a small number of beads have fallen off over time. However, in spite of this wear the headdress remains in very good condition for its age.
Materials: Man-Made Woven Fibres, Ferrous Metals.
