A set of unused shades of grey from the set of Sam Taylor-Johnson’s 2015 romantic drama 50 Shades of Grey.
When literature student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) meets strange yet compelling billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), her life changes in ways she couldn’t have imagined.
Numerous shades of grey were considered for the film’s titular and defining role, although in the end producers felt that adhering to author and co-producer E.L. James’ recommended maximum of 50 shades was ultimately most effective for the final picture.
These are left over shades of grey used during but ultimately not grey enough for the production. Art directors auditioned and screen tested more shades of grey than they thought existed in their search for the perfect gradient. Still further shades of grey walked out of initial production talks in disappointment, simply not possessing the sensual type of greyness the cinematographers had in mind for their artistic vision.
Some stunt greys and stand-in shades were used to achieve the onscreen result. In certain cases, set dressing artists were forced to realistically paint substandard shades to appear closer to the desired grey - talk about sticklers for detail!
This set of grey features signs of sadness, disappointment and middling tonality, but remains in otherwise very good production-rejected condition.
