A 1983 Variety newspaper featuring early promotion for John Milius's 1982 fantasy adventure, Conan the Barbarian.
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the title character, this movie follows a vengeful barbarian warrior who sets off to avenge his tribe and his parents who were slain by an evil sorcerer and his warriors when he was a boy.
Marked as ‘Vol 199’ and ‘No. 54’, this newspaper was printed in Hollywood on Thursday 19 May 1983. It features a full-colour centrefold announcing that the Dino De Laurentiis Corporation had acquired the movie right to the Conan novels. Inside the spread is an illustration of Conan’s sword against a backdrop of each Conan book cover. The back cover depicts Schwarzenegger as Conan, his sword held aloft beneath the movie title and ‘The Conan Saga continues’.
Other interesting stories include a cover story about Richard Pryor’s five-year deal with Columbia Pictures that would afford the actor huge fees and freedom. There is an article on Lucasfilm’s then-new THX Sound System – this newspaper was released the same month as Return of the Jedi (mentioned). It is a fascinating insight into later 20th Century showbiz.
Naturally yellowed from age and displaying minor creases, the newspaper and centrefold remain in good overall condition.
