An in-camera filming plate from Steven Spielberg's 1977 sci-fi film Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) witnesses an unidentified flying object, and even has a "sunburn" from its bright lights to prove it. Roy refuses to accept an explanation for what he saw and is prepared to give up his life to pursue the truth about UFOs.
This plate, intended to be loaded into a camera's filter mount for visual effects purposes, shows the railroad crossing where Roy Neary has his close encounter with visitors from another world. Created using a large-scale film print, it is secured between two glass sheets with black tape at the top and bottom. The film shows signs of age, including colour fading, with some scratches present on the glass but nonetheless this item remains in good, production-used condition.
Materials: Glass, Plastic, Paper.
