A mutant Nazi Warmonger mask and helmet from John Landis' horror comedy An American Werewolf in London. A group of mutant Nazis appeared in David Kessler's (David Naughton) final dream, which he experienced while recovering in hospital. Four mutant Nazis broke into his family home and slaughtered his father, mother, niece and nephew, before finally slitting his throat. The paint finish and markings on the right side of the helmet screen-match to the scene where the dream continued, and David witnessed the Warmonger Nazi stabbing Nurse Price (Jenny Agutter).
All of the film's innovative make-up and special effects were created by renowned special effects artist Rick Baker, who won the first-ever Academy Award® for Best Make-up and Hairstyling for his work on this production. Baker went on to win the award seven times throughout his career. Included in the lot is a letter of authenticity from Rick Baker himself.
This slip latex mask has been expertly hand-painted in shades of brown. It features a pair of menacing yellow eyes and an open mouth, which displays a set of discoloured teeth. It is accompanied by a fibreglass German helmet, which is intentionally distressed with holes and scuffs. Originally, all four mutants were going to wear helmets, but the Warmonger was the only character to wear one on screen.
There is a slit down the back of the mask for easy access, and the lot displays some minor signs of age, including light paint wear and flaking latex. The lot is presented on a custom-made display, with the production title decorating the front of the base. Powered by eight AA batteries, the title illuminates via a switch situated at the back of the base. Dimensions (displayed): 28 cm x 26 cm x 53 cm (11" x 10¼" x 20¾")
