A mechanoid activation screen used in Steven Spielberg’s 2001 science fiction movie A.I Artificial Intelligence.
A robotic boy, the first programmed to love, David (Haley Joel Osment) is adopted as a test case by a Cybertronics employee (Sam Robards) and his wife (Frances O'Connor). When their own child returns, they abandon David, who embarks on a journey with Teddy (voiced by Jack Angel) and Gigalo Joe (Jude Law) to find where he belongs.
These screens were used to activate the mechanoids, and one is clearly seen being used on a female mechanoid at the beginning of the movie, when Professor Hobby (William Hurt) is demonstrating the newest breakthrough in Mechas. The futuristic device is made from moulded plastic with soft round curves, black bobbled grips and a clear acrylic screen, behind which is an acetate facsimile of a touch screen that tells the owner how to activate their new companion.
The back of the device opens to reveal a light box that gave the prop its glow, which was powered by two nine volt batteries (the electronics have not been tested). The piece exhibits some wear from production use but otherwise is in overall good condition.
Materials: Plastic, Acetate, Acrylic, Ferrous Metals.
