A Bridge Too Far

Royal Engineers Jacket and Cap

Stock #13673

An Engineer jacket and cap worn in the 1977 action film A Bridge Too Far. Eager to cross the Rhine river and deliver a knockout blow to the Germans, the Allies plan a major assault on bridges throughout the Netherlands to secure their path to Germany. But as errors mount up, the lives of the soldiers battling behind enemy lines grows

This uniform and others like it were worn by members of the Royal Engineers and can be seen when the XXX corps and American troops rebuild the Son Bridge after it was destroyed, delaying their pursuit to Arnhem. Worn by stunt actor Paul Weston, this set was purchased from a senior crew member who worked on the film. Made from a khaki textured fabric, the jacket has various patches hand stitched to both sleeves including two ‘Royal Engineers’ patches and a patch with an image of a jumping boar placed underneath. The 1940’s pattern jacket is sized for a 42” to 43” chest. The cap is made from the same khaki fabric as the jacket and features a green quilted lining and brass coloured badge of the ‘Royal Engineers’ emblem on the front.

This set shows signs of wear including marks in the lining of the hat, tarnishing on the badge on the cap and some of the hand stitching coming loose around the patches. However, in spite of this wear, the jacket and cap remain in very good condition for their age.
