An internal mould used for one of the ape masks produced for Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 science fiction epic 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Inspired by Arthur C Clarke’s short story “The Sentinel”, the film follows an expedition to Jupiter led by captains Dr. Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) and Dr. Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) along with their intelligent computer HAL 9000 after a large black monolith is discovered beneath the surface of the moon.

Renowned special effects artist Stuart Freeborn designed the make-up and creature effects for the production. Ape masks were created for the infamous ‘Dawn of Man’ sequence at the beginning of the film and were so convincing that many thought the sequence involved acting apes. This piece would have been an internal mould used as a base for Freeborn and his team to work over, adding prosthetics on top.

Made from resin, the mask is a cast of a face with the eyes closed and features an extended jaw and nose section, shaped to appear more ape-like. A section where the mouth would be has been cut away allowing extra prosthetics and set of teeth to be added in.

The piece features slight damage to the top of the head and there is a hole within the mouth section. Grey residue is present on one side of the mouth and the piece shows light wear from production use. However, the mark remains in a very good condition considering its age and should be handled with care due to its fragile state.
