A special effects version of the legendary sword Excalibur, used in the historical drama King Arthur. A retelling of Arthurian legend, the story charts the life and travails of Arturius Castus (Clive Owen), commander of a brave band of warriors as they fight to protect the Britons left behind during the Roman withdrawal from Britannia from the rampaging Saxons.
This sword and others like it were used in the battles between Arturius’ band of knights and the Saxon hordes to the north. Exquisitely crafted in aluminium with a grip, guard and pommel made in resin, this particular example of Excalibur features intricate detailing along the blade with a range of engraved notches and an ornate grip covered in Celtic runes and patterns. The grip ends with a semi-transparent blue jewel at the pommel. The paint finish on the grip is intended to simulate gold, giving the weapon a truly regal look.

This Excalibur was used for special effects purposes for bloodletting, when sword slashes had to result in sprays of blood on and around Arturius’ foes. A section of the grip has been cut out, allowing for a tube to be fitted that would have been secreted inside the arm of Arturius’ armour. This tube then connects to a metal feed that runs the length of the sword, ending at an opening at the tip, from which blood would be sprayed.

An excellent piece and exquisitely made, this particular Excalibur has been through the wars, with a fair amount of production distressing and wear from use in filming. In spite of this, however, it remains in a good condition, and very much a sword worthy of King Arthur himself!
