Lot 325 – US Teaser “B” 7-Sheet Poster (1977), STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977)

Artist: Unknown Artist

One of the rarest of all “Star Wars” posters, this linen-backed US 7-Sheet Teaser was produced in tiny numbers and is believed to have been distributed to LA, San Francisco and New York only. Very few 7-Sheets have survived and it is possible that this example is one of only two to three in existence. The inclusion of the “May 25th” opening date also distinguishes this poster. The design is simple and to the point and would have provided the public with their first exposure to what evolved into the global “Star Wars” phenomenon.

81 1/2″ x 94″ (207 x 239 cm)

Condition: Good. Linen-backed with some foldline restoration and surface scuffs but complete

Lot 318 – US 1-Sheet “Chaykin” Pre-Production Poster (1976), STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977)

Artist: Howard Chaykin

A pre-production poster sold at the 1976 San Diego Comic Convention to introduce the public to the concept of the mooted “Star Wars” film. This was part of George Lucas’s strategy to entice Universal Studios to back the film (they passed). An interesting example of how aspirant movie-makers sometimes used posters in order to secure production finance (Hammer Studios also routinely did this). Dating from ’76, this represents a genuinely early piece of “Star Wars” memorabilia.

20″ x 29″ (51 x 74 cm)

Condition: Excellent. Unrestored, rolled with a few minor creases, in excellent condition.

Lot 341 – US Commercial Poster (1978), STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977)

Artist: Bill Selby

An attractive poster design by Bill Selby. Although this poster has been previously documented as the very first Star Wars Fan Club poster, we believe the poster was not distributed by the Fan Club but was sold commercially by Factors instead. This poster is sold with a letter of provenance from the artist which tells a fascinating story about how the artist flew to LA with the original poster artwork to seek approval and how the artwork was nearly crushed en route in an airport mishap. (Sold with a signed letter of provenance by the artist Bill Selby.)

20″ x 28″ (51 x 71 cm)

Condition: Excellent. Unrestored, unfolded, rolled, in near mint condition.

Lot 338 – US Concert Poster (1978), STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977)

Artist: John Alvin

From the collection of “Star Wars” producer Gary Kurtz, this is a rare linen-backed “Star Wars” concert poster. Though ostensibly advertising the John Williams “Star Wars” concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Nov 1977, this limited edition poster was created in Spring 1978. The poster features artwork by John Alvin and the artist signed a number of those printed. This poster carries both Alvin’s signature, his distinctive printed name and has been additionally dated “1978”, these annotations are not to the poster itself but to the lower right hand border of the linen-backing. Rare in any condition but this example is near mint.

24 1/2″ x 37″ (62 x 94 cm)

Condition: Excellent. The poster is in superb near mint condition with no discernible faults.

Please note that this poster is currently cellophane wrapped and has been photographed as such.

Lot 321 – Hong Kong Poster (1977), STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977)

Artist: Tom Chantrell

This linen-backed Hong Kong first release “Star Wars” (1977) poster is based on the Tom Chantrell Style-C US 1-Sheet design. The print run in the Hong Kong territories for the film would have been relatively small and this poster is consequently a scarce “Star Wars” international variant.

21″ x 31″ (53 x 79 cm)

Condition: Excellent. Linen-backed, unfolded and rolled in near mint condition.

Lot 28 – UK Prototype Artwork Poster (2017), STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977)

Artist: Tom Beauvais

A limited edition high quality print (#88/295) of prototype “Star Wars” Quad poster artwork originally completed by the artist Tom Beauvais in 1977. Beauvais was one of two British artists tasked with preparing such concept designs (Chantrell’s prototype eventually selected). Though unused, the Beauvais design gives emphasis to Luke and Leia, satisfying the Gary Kurtz directive that the British poster campaign should focus more on the personalities in “Star Wars” rather than the hardware. The poster print comes hand signed and numbered by the artist Tom Beauvais. (This item comes with a signed COA from the artist.)

30″ x 40″ (76 x 102 cm)

Condition: Excellent. Rolled giclée print, in near mint condition.

Please note this lot is sold without copyright, reproduction rights, licensing agreements or any other type of legal release.
