Alien

Alien was the 1979 science fiction horror film that became a sensation. It spawned endless imitations and numerous sequels and has rarely, if ever, been bettered. It was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Yaphet Kotto and Harry Dean Stanton. It also made an international star of a young actress called Sigourney Weaver.

The production design of the movie is perhaps what is best remembered . The incredible creature designed by Swiss surrealist H. R. Giger. The sets designed by Ron Cobb and the costumes by John Mollo.

It was John Mollo who created the now legendary spacesuits for the movie. The Samurai Warrior of ancient Japan was used as the basis of inspiration and the input of French comic artist Moebius did the rest. Moebius brought the heavy, bulky look to the design, a look and style which had already featured in his earlier comic book work. The actors apparently hated the impractical design of the costume because their movements were greatly restricted and the suits had no ventilation.

This spacesuit was worn by John Hurt as Kane. The yellow markings of the costume are unique to him. Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) and Dallas (Tom Skerritt) blue and red accordingly. It is one of just two full size outfits made for him. This one matches the worn worn while walking through the “derelict” and around the facehugger eggs. A different suit with a slightly different configuration can be seen hanging up in the ship later in the film.

The costume remains in its original film used condition with the exception of the back pack, the wrist guards and the “Kane” name badge to the chest. All these components have been replaced with a painstakingly accurate replicas sourced from original reference.
