An 'Elysium Dispatcher' used in the 2000 Ridley Scott Oscar-winning classic Gladiator. This incredible, robust piece was used by the Roman's to ensure that those who were supposed to be dead really were, carried by a specially selected person around battlegrounds and arenas despatching those breathing their last breaths instantly to the Elysium or the underworld. While not clearly spotted in the final cut of the movie, a behind the scenes documentary shows this giant piece behind the film's armourer Simon Atherton.
The main body of the spear-like weapon is a thick wooden pole, wrapped in a variety of leather patches and braids to aid with the grip, tipped with a cold metal blade and topped with a cast resin ram's head decorated to look like the metal plinth it sits upon with curling horns and focussed stare. It stands at a whopping 200cm (79”) long and remains in very good condition with a light amount of intentional distress to give it a well travelled appearance.
